Couple of Bengal cats at Yorkshire rescue need adopting 17/03/2023

Image
As Yorkshire Cat Rescue state it is rare for a rescue center to have a couple of purebred cats up for adoption and in this instance, it is a couple of Bengals. One of them has a damaged right ear flap which does not enhance their appearance. They don't say how he damaged his ear. No big deal. They've put up their adoption fee to £400 for each. That's about one third of the purchase price for this cat so not bad.  Floki. Adoption fee £400 at Yorkshire Cat Rescue at 17/02/2023 Floki. Adoption fee £400 at Yorkshire Cat Rescue at 17/02/2023 If you fancy adopting a Bengal cat on the cheap this is an opportunity. But of course, the adoption fee is a fraction of the overall cost in terms of maintenance over the remainder of the life of a cat. The rescue have said they need to be in a home where there are no other cats or dogs and that they should be confined to the home including the use of an enclosed backyard if available (rare). These guys don't get on with other pets. That...

Black kitten unboxed!

Image
You know how some people make videos of the un-boxing of a fresh, new product such as an iPhone. These videos are very welcome to product fetishists. The box is almost as important as the thing inside it. In fact boxes can be quite important because it tells you quite a bit about the quality of the product contained within the box! Enough of that. @savannah_gamblin Welcome baby Azul 💙 #kittens #catsoftiktok #fyp #viral #animals ♬ original sound - Savannah Gamblin Well here we have a black kitten who is being unboxed on video. We don't know much about the back story. I have gleaned a little bit because this is a kitten box with air holes and a handle. On the side it says " Cats Are Angels with Whiskers ". Indeed they are. Until they scratch you when playing with you! Forget about that, it's not important. Kitten unboxed. Screenshot. "Cats are angels with whiskers" . Here is the same video. It is a backup copy incase the one above goes wrong 😃. M...

Crying cat wanders into the backyard of a shelter asking to be let in

Image
Sigmund the cat - photo: Detroit Community Cat Rescue. Summary This is the story of a cat named Sigmund (also known as Siggy) who was rescued by the Detroit Community Cat Rescue (DCCR). Sigmund is an orange and white tomcat who was found wandering near the shelter by Liz Haack, the DCCR Shelter Manager. When she offered him food, Sigmund eagerly accepted and allowed Liz to bring him inside the shelter. Sigmund is estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old and had likely lived outside for his entire life before being rescued. He is described as being very friendly and affectionate, with a constant purring motor. Sigmund tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), but this does not prevent him from living a normal, healthy life. After spending several months at the shelter, Sigmund was adopted by a young man who fell in love with him after reading his story. Sigmund is now living in a loving home and is very happy. Quotes from shelter manager Liz Haack, DCCR Shelter Manager s...

Tabby kitten with the cutest voice rescued from Los Angeles' streets

Image
A kitten who has been named Cindy Lou Who was rescued from Los Angeles' streets and found her way to a foster carer of cats, Aly. Aly says that Cindy Lou was shaking and hissing whenever people got too close. But she was meowing in hunger as well. She was torn between two things; getting food while being fearful of the people who wanted to give her food. So as you can see Aly put some enticing food on a spatula and gingerly handed it out to Cindy who licks it off. It's the beginning of socialisation I think. She began to emerge from her hiding place. Aly did her best to reassure Cindy Lou and, "The moment she realised I was here just to give her food and water, she immediately started purring". She became much more friendly and lost some of her shyness. It all happened in 24 hours. Quickly thereafter Cindy Lou climbed out of her bed and crawled up her foster parent's lap. She then fell asleep.  She's fallen on her feet in a beautifully warm and friendly ...

Hyperactive rescued kittens play continuously around a tolerant mum

Image
I think we are in Turkey in this video and you are looking at a litter of hyperactive kittens who were rescued with their mother who had a leg injury. They were being fostered by a lady but she decided she couldn't manage it because of an injury to herself and therefore they have ended up in this home. It is the home of the father of the person who made the video. That's pretty well all I know except that they were looking for adopters as at August 2019. I expect that the kittens have been adopted by now. They were going to make sure that the kids were fully weaned before they were adopted out. The mother looks very tolerant but as one commenter said it looks like she's thinking "Lord give me strength!".   Kittens are incredibly active and is all about play and learning one's limits in play. You can see that they incorporate aspects of hunting behaviour within their play, and defensive behaviour. In one little episode a kitten goes sideways on and adopts th...

Polydactyl Maine Coon- Cat Ms. Beauty Cat

Image
Polydactyl Maine Coon- Cat Ms. Beauty Cat. Tootsie did well on this photo op, I think. I call it her "Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up" pose.** It's really a way better pic than the one that appears on her "driver's license" (see below). *g* ** Movie trivia = Sunset Boulevard

My cat got her driver's license!

Image
My cat got her driver's license! Well, that was my first reaction when I was given this, shortly after I went to pick Tootie up from the vet. I mean like, same plastic, same size, same terrible picture! I was so laughing. (some details above have been obscured to defeat potential catnappers) Being the YouTube addict that I am, I HAD to go looking for cats who drive. UH OH! Toonces the driving cat! SNL. Now I learn! Toonces has quite the history.... ( quote from wiki ) Toonces was the family pet of Lyle (Steve Martin in the first sketch, thereafter by Dana Carvey) and Brenda Clark (Victoria Jackson), an enthusiastic couple who would allow their cat to drive the family car. At first, they were delighted that their cat had such an ability, but were always horrified to discover (too late) that Toonces was actually not a skilled driver at all. Double UH OH! Can you say silver tabby? Shh.... p.s. for Michael my blog host- standards for getting a "driver's license" in...

June is American Humane's Adopt-A-Cat Month®

Image
June is American Humane Association's Adopt-A-Cat Month®. Below is the image of the poster they created (click on image for larger version), and you can download this and more from the link here . The following is from a page at the AHA site- go there to read more. Approximately 4 million cats end up in shelters every year. One of them is sure to be a perfect match for you! Each year, thousands of kittens are born during spring and summer -- and many end up in animal shelters, waiting for loving homes. To promote adoptions of these playful, affectionate animals, American Humane celebrates Adopt-A-Cat Month® in June. Come visit the fabulous felines at your local animal shelter, and take home your new best friend! What I had not realized is that cats are "seasonal breeders"- females only come into estrous when the day length is 12 hours or longer (12 of 24)- thus responding to changes in seasons. Cat biology! No wonder shelters are strapped during Spring and Summer (more ...

Cats in Television- Kitty in "The Closer"

I pay attention to cats in movies, and, thanks to Jone Bouman aka "JB" in the Film & Television Unit at the American Human Association , I was able to solve the "Orangey aka Rhubarb" mystery here . I don't watch much TV, but JB suggested I check out "The Closer", because the cat "Kitty" appears in various episodes. And, the LA connection- "The Closer" is set in LA, where I more or less grew up- VG= "Valley Girl". What JB didn't know- I grew up reading mysteries and police procedurals and watching Perry Mason! Timely advice- the new season of The Closer starts on June 8, and June is American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Cat Month® So... first step was to see what was on YouTube showing Kitty in The Closer. This was it: One YouTube- Season 2, Episode 13- "Fritz left the door open"- Kitty vanishes, and then... Direct link is here. Other parts of the Kitty story are below- and btw, "Brenda" i...

Cats in Movies- solving the Orangey aka Rhubarb mystery

Image
Who was Orangey? Who was Rhubarb? Thanks to the wonderful help of "JB" in the Film & Television Unit here of the American Humane Association here , I've made great progress in solving the mystery. I contacted the Film & Television Unit of AHA with several research questions, via email, on the off chance that I might get a response. Not only did I get a very prompt response, the person who emailed me back gave me exactly the information I was seeking. WOW! Thoroughly professional. One research question (actually a secondary question) had to do with the filmography of Orangey aka Rhubarb the cat. I've been tracking the filmograhy of Orangey aka Rhubarb, who appeared in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" here, "Gigot" here and "The Incredible Shrinking Man" here, among many other films. I had spent a lot of time watching Rhubarb in "The Comedy of Terrors", and became convinced that this was NOT the same cat as ...

Adopting a polydactly cat via petfinder.com?

Image
If you are interested in adopting a polydactly cat, read on, and please leave a comment. I adopted a polydactly cat, a Maine coon that I found via petfinder.com in January, 2009. I was looking for a Maine coon, and there was "Tootsie", a polydactly Maine coon purebred, and I fell in love. Honestly, I don't know if "polys" are special, based on my "one cat" experience. It may just be the "Maine coon thing" ;) But, the way she uses her paws.... well... A lot of people think polys / polydactyls ARE special. And, readers who would happily adopt one, if they could find one to adopt. Thus, I emailed someone at petfinder.com, suggesting that "polydactyl" be added to the advanced search terms. I got back a prompt reply from a very nice person, saying that is was a great suggestion, which would she would pass along to the development team. Fingers crossed, and hoping! And, here's how you can help! If you want petfinder to inclu...

Polydactyl Maine coons- poly paws celebration

Image
This is Feets, Booglum's Maine coon polydactyl rescue cat: Direct link is here Booglum says: "Here is the baby Maine Coon Kitty, Feets, and his big huge polydactyl paws! Aww, such a baby. He is our snowstorm rescue baby. :)" I've featured Feets before, here . Love that kitty, who, btw, is somehow entered by breed as a "Mancoon" at the vets! So I've been told ;) Here's Tootsie, my Maine coon polydactyl rescue cat (click on photo for a larger image)- also on flickr with Creative Commons License. Cat comes home after 2 years, thanks to microchip

Image
Ozzie the bengal cat was reunited with his family, after 2 years, thanks to a cat microchip. I read this story earlier this year, and thought of it again after reading about cat microchips over at Michael's place. Selected quotes below are from this newpaper story Cat Ozzie's back from Millport after two years "A MISSING moggie has been reunited with its Bearsden owners — after turning up in Millport TWO YEARS after it vanished. Karen Ratcliffe was stunned when she was told her beloved pet had been found safe and well, 38 miles away in the seaside town last week." Here's the map of the 38 miles- A is Bearsden, B is Millport: "She has no idea how the Bengal tabby managed to cross the waves to the Isle of Cumbrae — but she and her family are delighted to welcome him home. Ozzie was handed into North Ayrshire Cats Protection by a woman who had noticed that he was a stray and they found that he had a microchip which enabled them to trace his original owner. ...

Otto the rescue cat- with a huge YouTube fan club

Otto was rescued as a kitten from a Best Buy parking lot. The humans coaxed him out from under a Semi truck by feeding him some left-over hamburger from Chili's. Otto is "cat star" at YouTube. LOL! This is Otto, doing one of his "special tricks". I've watched it several times over the past few days, and it's a keeper in my category "watch this when you need a good laugh". Casper a polydactyl rescue cat- he's white but not deaf

Image
Not all white cats are deaf. It depends on many things. This is Casper, a polydactyl cat rescued from the Human's yard. Direct link is here Human says: "6 days 6 weeks 6 months; Well close enough, we found this little kitten abandoned in our yard, still had his eyes closed, middle segment is about Christmas (playing with the wrapping bow), and last segment shows his polydactyl 6 toes, brown/blue eyes. He is not deaf as many are. And just as cute as can be." Casper has one blue eye and one brown/ amber eye, which is a good indicator that he's deaf in one ear, on the side with the blue eye. A good discussion of odd-eyed cats is here. Intro: "What causes odd-eyed cats? The color of eyes of an odd eyed cat are blue plus either yellow, orange or green." An explanation about the cause of white coats and hereditary deafness is here. And, this article gives even more information about the genetics of cat coat color- and white fur and deafness in cats here. Ma...

Maine coons love to groom their humans

I just found this latest YouTube from Human Booglum . We've exchanged quite a few emails about cat "asthma attack symptoms" vs. "cat throwing up hairball symptoms". More on that later. Course, we also discussed our polydactyl Maine coon rescue kitties! This one features "Feets" the polydactyl Maine coon- Human said, in earlier YouTube here , "Feets is our brand new polydactyl Maine Coon, we think he is about a year old and nowhere near full grown. We rescued him from a snowstorm two days before Christmas. He is just a big baby love!" This YouTube made me laugh out loud. Direct link is here Booglum, you say "Feets decides to be naughty". But here's another perspective, which I hope you will consider- Feets wasn't being naughty- Feets was trying to style your hair, but because he's so young, and so new to the hairstyling business, he just didn't get it right the first try. Give him time. Maybe you can show him th...

Tootsie polydactyl Maine coon cat invents new cat toy

Image
I've worried about Tootsie getting bored, especially when I'm not around. I bought a few "official" kitty toys. The only one she liked was the feather toy. Deal is, though, that she ran off with the feather part, and I haven't been able to locate it. I'm beginning to suspect that this was her way of mentioning to me that she was now bored with the feather, rather than her having forgotten where she put it. Why do I say this? Well, she was really nutty for plastic straws for a few weeks. But now, they just don't seem to hold the same fascination. Used to be that she would throw these about, jump on them, and push them off high places, without any intervention from me. Now she pretty much ignores them, even when I try to get her interested. But, whew! Tootsie is a very resourceful cat. So, I am downstairs, and I hear thundering about upstairs. Not exactly the first time this has happened. She gets especially wild and crazy when I'm not watchin...

Tootsie my Maine coon is afraid of thunder

Image
There was a huge thunder storm here the other evening. Poor Tootsie. It really freaked her out in way that I've not see before. She bolted to some hidey hole, but then I tried to comfort her. I called her, and she emerged, but she came to me in a manner of "walking" that was something I'd only seen a cat do once before. Yes, she came to me. But, the way she moved- every part of her was as close to the floor as possible. Her front part was so hunkered down that her shoulder blades were above her spine. Almost the same for her hind parts. Her belly and her tail were wiping the dust off the floor. Of course, I couldn't get a picture. I tried to find a picture online that showed this stance, without success. I tried every sort of google search term. She wasn't stalking. She wasn't creeping. She wasn't sneaking. She was doing something else more intense. Here are two images I found, which are the closest I could get to describing her stance....

Tootsie the Maine coon does her cat yoga exercises

Image
I finally caught Tootsie on camera, doing PART of her cat yoga routine. She does this whenever she wakes up. This is just a sample! Tootsie is a rescue cat. She has turned into a whole new cat since I adopted her in January, less than two months ago. I decided to add the following picture- the online picture at the rescue site- to say two things: consider adopting a rescue cat if you can, and, Tootsie is a joy. I can't help but think that she is enjoying her new home. Click on the label "cat photography" to see more pictures of Tootsie the polydactyl Maine Coon.
