In Breakfast at Tiffany's the ginger tabby cat has a symbolic role

They don't make movies like they used to. This is so much better. And what a cat! A ginger tabby who played the part heroically getting soaking wet. Not many domestic cats would have been able to do it. In the clip Hepburn's character, Holly Golightly, hasn't even given her cat a name. She calls him 'Cat'. He has to be male as nearly all ginger tabbies are. I think not naming her cat was meant to portray her at that time as being cold-hearted, grasping and insular which she was. It was symbolic and the ginger cat plays a symbolic role again it seems to me.  She dumps him in the rain after she's taken a lecture on her behaviour. She returns to find him in the pouring rain and instantly loves him. She can express her love and her cat is the first recipient. It is the first stage, a stepping stone, in her accepting a close relationship with, and loving, the male lead in the film played by George Peppard.
