Check behind your oven to find your cat's toy stash!

Image
Check behind your oven to find your cat's stash!. Screenshot. Cats play with human objects. If it is one the floor it's game. You don't really need to buy toys as they are all around you all the time. They almost invariably push the objects under furniture and OVENS! Why do they do this? To make play more interesting. To make it more realistic. They seem to be creating a typical scenario when a mouse hides under an object. The cat then pokes and prods under the oven to try and get it out. That's feline fun!! And so we come to the video of the owner of a stunning ginger tabby pulling out their oven from the wall for the first time in a long time. It has to be said that it is quite clean behind it 😎 but it is littered with cat toys! What are they? No idea. They look like hair curlers or something like that. Any small plastic item is a good cat toy to poke and prod. To transform into a mouse to be killed. Their cat innocently meanders onto the scene of the 'crime...

The intense curiosity of the domestic cat is switched on by fast movements

Image
The domestic cat can be intensely curious. They are inherently and instinctively motivated to respond to quick movements and sounds which might correspond to the sounds of a prey animal. Domestic cats can locate the source of sound very accurately .  The intensely curious domestic cat stimulated by fast movements. Screenshot. They will pick up a quick moving object in their peripheral vision and investigate to find out if it is a prey animal. This cat is responding in this way to what sounds like a liquid being poured into a container. It doesn't matter what's happening off the screen.  What matters is how the cat is reacting which is with great intensity and curiosity. The pupils of the eyes are wide open. This is because it's inside the home and there is not a lot of light. Also they may be wide open partly because this cat wants to see as clearly as possible.   The domestic cat's instinctive reaction to fast moving objects can interfere with how people interact w...

How to wind up and calm down a kitten!

Image
The video is called "How to calm down a kitteh!". I think it should be called, "How to wind up and calm down a kitten"! The owner drives this sweet little black kitten to distraction with his play. It's quite easy to get a kitten wound up like this when playing because they love to play. As you can see the kitten bites and scratches the man's hand. The experts say that you should not use your hands as a cat play toy. It's a bad habit because the kitten or adult cat get used to that piece of your anatomy as a toy and it can be hard to remove the habit. But this is not a major criticism; just an observation. And then the man says that it's time to stop because his hand and forearm is mangled! And so he pushes his thumb against the kitten's forehead. This is just gentle stroking which helps to calm his kitten down and in any case the kitten is probably exhausted judging by the amount of vigourous play that he has been involved in. Cat versus inkjet printer - Brit voice-over

Image
This video will make you laugh, I can pretty well guarantee it. And when you watch it you will have to come to the conclusion that all domestic cats are British because the guy who does the voice-over has a sort of working class and slightly cockney British accent and as I said he does it brilliantly. There is a world of cats who are fighting with inkjet printers. They are all over the planet slapping printers and chewing the paper that is ejected out of them. I think somebody made printers so that they could be toys for cats. I don't think you could have designed a better toy for a domestic cat than an inkjet printer because they never fail to fascinate. And cats always end up bashing the machine and chewing the paper. If they don't do that they're looking at it in fascination and when the paper starts to roll out they can't contain their excitement. I reckon they think an inkjet printer is some sort of prey item. Note I use the word "item". Not an "anim...

Twist ties- favorite cat toy of my Maine Coon

Image
Yes, twist ties are great cat toys! In an earlier post, I described how my Maine coon Tootsie led me to this discovery: Tootsie polydactyl Maine coon cat invents new cat toy -- as I said then: Tootsie is a very resourceful cat. So, I am downstairs, and I hear thundering about upstairs. Not exactly the first time this has happened. She gets especially wild and crazy when I'm not watching. And then, out of the corner of my eye, as I am sitting downstairs at the computer, I catch a glimpse of her trotting across the kitchen with "something" in her jaws. And then I hear scraping noises. She's whapping that "something" about, as I shortly discover. The figure below gives the details. Part a shows the "something" she was trotting around with. Why yes, it IS a twist tie, and it was included in the packaging for the Roomba I purchased. Part b shows my attempts to create other options, following on from Tootsie's toy invention. A scale bar is...

Box is interesting- Maine Coon cat in Japan

Another one from my vast library of "YouTube favorites": Human says (via online translation): When there is a hole to become want to enter is it the instinct of a cat. Original comment is: 穴があると入りたくなるのは猫の本能でしょうか? Direct link is here I ended up adopting a Maine coon partly because of the great YouTubes I found featuring Maine coons- so I've created a separate label "Maine coons on You Tube". Tootsie polydactyl Maine coon cat invents new cat toy

Image
I've worried about Tootsie getting bored, especially when I'm not around. I bought a few "official" kitty toys. The only one she liked was the feather toy. Deal is, though, that she ran off with the feather part, and I haven't been able to locate it. I'm beginning to suspect that this was her way of mentioning to me that she was now bored with the feather, rather than her having forgotten where she put it. Why do I say this? Well, she was really nutty for plastic straws for a few weeks. But now, they just don't seem to hold the same fascination. Used to be that she would throw these about, jump on them, and push them off high places, without any intervention from me. Now she pretty much ignores them, even when I try to get her interested. But, whew! Tootsie is a very resourceful cat. So, I am downstairs, and I hear thundering about upstairs. Not exactly the first time this has happened. She gets especially wild and crazy when I'm not watchin...

New cat toys- remote control helicopters!

Looking for a new cat toy? I'm gonna get one of these! Direct link is here Human says: Snow White meows for her new toy, the Helicopter! Watch an exotic shorthair cat take on a remote control helicopter and have the time of her life! This is her favorite toy and the Air Hogs Havoc Helicopter survives quite a lot of abuse. YouTube commenter says: Our cat, Grendel, kept getting up on the shelf and finding where we stored our helicopter. He'd drag it to a corner and "kill" it when we weren't watching! Human of Snow White replies: Snow White's trying to find the helicopter too, lol. We have to hide it from her! Here are some price comparisons link - looks like one helicopter is ~ $40.00. And here's a fun YouTube explaining how to control the helicopters (no kittehs involved)Direct link is here And, what exactly IS an "exotic shorthair"? Well, it's an actual cat breed! Michael has a great article that gives the details- starting with "T...
