Cat loves carrying baby potatoes in his mouth. Why?

There is only one reason why this energetic and loving cat is almost obsessed with carrying baby potatoes in their mouth and that is they are conflating a domestic cat's instinctive desire to hunt and their desire to play which is play-hunting.

Domestic cats who are prevented from hunting have to kill time rather than animals 👍😢- MikeB

So, this cat who carries baby potatoes in his mouth is play-hunting. If you watch the entire video, you will see that they push the baby potatoes around as if they were home-made cat toys which in fact they are.

And when he's done, he picks the potato up in his mouth and carries it to a different location and then drops it and perhaps prods it around the room. He is carrying a prey animal in his mouth and then when he drops it, he is pushing that 'prey animal' around in exactly the same way you see domestic cats pushing mice around when they are dead or half dead.

Social media interprets the behavior as strange but there is actually nothing unusual about it. It is a reflection of a cat's innate desire to hunt which has been nullified by being a full-time indoor cat. The desire is always there but its expression is prevented which causes frustration. Thankfully the owner knows how to dissipate some of that frustration in play.

This cat looks quite young and therefore as you will see in the video, he does this a lot. He is almost non-stop until he crashes out and sleeps.

But adult cats kept indoors full-time will spend a lot of time sleeping to kill time because, as mentioned, they can't hunt which is their raison d'être. It is all they live for. Their life turns on it. If they can't do it, they have got to kill time rather than animals 😉 unless their owner finds a good substitute which can only be play and lots of it.
